Meet the team

ED

Ed grew up in Brighton listening to his dad’s soul records on repeat, spending days glued to the speakers. At 12 he picked up a guitar, and by his mid-teens he was trying to mix tracks in Cubase SX3. Music tech college followed, where he learnt Pro Tools, started recording bands and found himself making tea while his friends worked with producer Peter Miles, quietly absorbing techniques that would shape his career.

A detour through his late teens and early twenties saw him running a restaurant and working on major films like Star Wars and Mission Impossible, organising synchronised helicopter take-offs and speedboat stunts on the Thames. A motorcycle accident forced a reset and reignited his commitment to music… from the safety of the studio!

He used his insurance payout to work unpaid at a London studio where he met artists including Milk Disco, Goat Girl, Shame and The Fat White Family, ultimately crossing paths with Geoff Travis of Rough Trade and getting a glimpse of how careers are built.

Over 15 years he has engineered, produced and recorded in world-class facilities including Abbey Road, Snap, Lightship 95, Soup and Giant Wafer. His credits span UK Album Chart Top 10 releases and composition work used on TV, with production and writing for Rough Trade, EMI, Universal and Sony. He has worked with established artists such as Frank Turner, NOFX, The Lottery Winners, Skinny Lister and The Spice Girls, all the while nurturing early careers for acts including Goat Girl, Shame and As It Is and quietly developing a (now-signed to Universal) YouTube covers singer under NDA.

When Covid hit, with no work and dwindling savings, Ed moved back to Brighton with his partner (now wife), adopted a dog, converted a campervan and travelled the UK, teaching mixing from until van life quickly lost its appeal. Searching for a creative community, green space and proximity to clients, they settled in Leeds, where Ed opened Mixing Hertz Studios in Meanwood.

Today Ed works closely with DIY artists, helping them elevate their music so they can achieve radio play, secure better gigs and build careers. Ed believes better music deserves to be mainstream.

MIKE

Mike Jeffery is the newest addition to the Mixing Hertz team with a history and passion within music and a career spent in building and developing businesses.

Growing up in home that loved music, I was exposed to a vast array of different artists and genres and vividly remember constantly watching a Michael Jackson VHS.

Later in life I went to study Music Performance, here I began to take my journey as a vocalist and guitarist seriously.

During my time at college I formed and performed with a number of bands spanning genre’s most notably We’re Not Worthy, which is where I met Ed, as he worked on our debut EP, While in this band we were lucky enough to play around the UK and with some amazing bands such as Chunk No Captain Chunk, Me vs Hero, Polar Bear Club and many more.

As with most bands there is an eventual end and for me this began my love and passion for business and growth, spending over a decade working my way up from cleaning a warehouse to being a managing director of a hand tool business, and growing said business to turning over half a million pounds annually.

Over this last 2 years I have re-ignited my passion for music, taking part in the amazing programs Ed has set up with Mixing Hertz and delving into the world of music production which has always been an ambition of mine, and after speaking with Ed and experiencing the product first hand I knew this was something that had great potential and a journey I want to be a part of, luckily for me Ed had the same idea.

Together we can build upon the fantastic business Ed has created, and further support artists across the country to help them reach the audiences they truly deserve.
